KAWANT, JUNE 24, 2008: With the new academic year already underway, preparations are on to restart the Village Education Programme (VEP) in the Kawant villages. The programme for this year will begin from July 1 and will have a total of 28 classes conducted in 22 villages. A training session was held at Don Bosco Kawant on Monday, June 23, for the teachers who will be taking these classes. Addressing the group, Fr. Gregory Almeida, Rector, explained to them the aim and the importance of this project. Speaking about education, Fr. Gregory stressed the point that the education we impart should lead to the overall development of the students and also orient them towards their future careers. Regarding the teaching methodology to be employed in the classes, he briefed them about the Play Way style of teaching. He also discussed with the teachers the general rules and regulations to be kept in mind. To maintain a high quality in the VEP, the teachers will have training sessions twice every month. Furthermore, twice a year the teachers from the primary section of Don Bosco High School will conduct tests in the villages for the children frequenting the classes. This will help gauge the progress being made by the students. This year Br. Ramesh Durairaj will be incharge of this educational programme in Kawant. The VEP plays a key role in spreading literacy in these tribal villages.
