BIS #2062 TEACHERS DAY CELEBRATIONS BOSCO SAMJIK VIKAS KENDRA

Fr. Anaclete D’Mello sdb
VALVANDA, SEPTEMBER 27, 2010: BSVS has organized teachers day celebrations in forty villages in the first and second week of September 2010. The objective of the celebration was to promote the importance of education among the children, parents and teachers. A brief description is given below about the celebrations held in some villages.
Bosco Samajik Vikas Kendra (BSVS) operates in Jawhar and Mokhada Taluka of Thane district. Majority of the population in this area are tribal’s. In Jawhar and Mokhada, most of the schools are functioning in multi-grade situations, where one or two teachers have to teach a number of classes simultaneously. Due to lack of motivation from parents and unawareness of importance of education children are not sufficiently motivated in their studies. They lack supervision and encouragement from parents as well as teachers, which makes children discontinue their studies. On the other hand the infrastructure is inadequate, teachers are irregular, inadequate teaching staff and uninteresting teaching techniques also lead to children dropping out from school. BSVS conducts support classes in forty villages for children enrolled in government schools in classes I to IX. On an average fifty children from each village is availing of this study support. Hence approximately two thousand children are benefiting from this programme.

The SSC exam is a crucial academic benchmark for school children; their performance in this exam will determine whether or not they get admission into colleges of their choice. However, children appearing for their SSC exams from state-run schools are often not adequately prepared for them. In particular, they face difficulties in maths, science and English. BSVS has set up study support classes for SSC students from residential schools in fifteen villages. They are tutored in maths, science and English for two hours every day.
Teachers’ day was celebrated in all the villages where BSVS is running support study classes and special classes for class X students. School children along with their teachers participated in the programme. Various competitions such as Langadi, Lemon and Spoon race, essay writing, drawing, and elocution etc. were organized for the students. The winners were given prizes by the village Sarpanch or Head master of the school. Many villagers have gathered for the programme. Village Sarpanch had honored the teachers during the celebration. Village Education Committee played an important role to organize the people.

Head master of the school in Khodala said that, “This is the first time that the teachers’ day is celebrated in our school. We are very happy to receive a warm welcome from the people and children”.

Teachers’ day celebrations were a great success in all the villages. Teachers, students, Gram Panchayat members and parents of the children participated actively in the programme. For many of them it was their first teachers’ day celebration. The programme has helped to create awareness about the importance of education in the area.

Special thanks to Fr. Carlos George, principal Don Bosco High School Borivali and his students for contributing the gift articles. Gift articles distributed during the celebrations were contributed by the students from Don Bosco High School Borivali.
