BIS #2489 KIDNEY MATCH FOR SALESIAN PRIESTS

BIS Correspondent
MUMBAI, AUGUST 6, 2011: When it comes to sacrifice, there can be no limits. Two Salesian priests came together for a Kidney match! Salesian Priest Fr. Lloyd Rodrigues, had been suffering from acute kidney failure for the last four years. Renal dialysis has been his only option. Today, he is on the road to recovery…his kidney days are here again. Thanks to the donor, Fr. Glenford Lowe, a Salesian priest and second cousin to Fr. Rodrigues.

Over the years, many Salesian priests and friends had come forward as potential renal donors. Finally, after a battery of medical tests and legal processes, the two priests were admitted at Hinduja Hospital. On July 26, 2011, Fr. Lowe underwent right renal nephrectomy under renowned surgeons Dr. S. Sagade and Dr. V. Joshi. Fr. Rodrigues was in the hands of Dr. Kamat. Speaking of his stay at the hospital, Fr. Lowe had only words of praise for the hospital. “Hinduja Hospital is very professional in its approach and yet so humane and compassionate in its service,” affirmed Fr. Lowe. When asked about the pain he had to bear, he smiling said, “I came here by choice to be part of Fr. Lloyd’s medication process. Where there is love, the colour of pain is always Gold. Supported by so much prayer, there was nothing to fear!”

Nephrologist and Consultant, Dr. Allan Almeida, together with his medical team who monitored Fr. Rodrigues cannot be forgotten. Where there was no hope, they always found a better solution. “I feel young again and thanks to all who were part of this process. Your prayers have gone a long way to bring me the necessary healing. Thanks to Glenn for his noble heart,” said Fr. Rodrigues.

A close member of the family had this to share, “Fr. Glenn’s decision came to us as no surprise. Generosity has always been his second name. We are proud of be part of this. His generosity and sacrifice has made the Eucharistic words ‘this is my body broken for you’ more tangible and alive.

Thanks also to all the medical team, the Salesians and relatives for their availability and concern.”
Fr. Rodrigues has spent most of his priestly ministry in Ahmednagar and Nashik. Fr. Lowe, on the other hand, has spent twenty years of his priestly ministry in the Salesian missions of Tanzania and Kenya -East Africa.  Presently, Fr. Lowe is the Director of the Archdiocesan Value Education Centre (AVEC) Mumbai, and facilitates and animates teachers and students in Education to Values for all schools and colleges affiliated to the Archdiocesan Board of Education (ABE).

As the pilgrim relic of Don Bosco arrives in Mumbai at the Shrine of Don Bosco’s Madonna from August 13 – 16, 2011, we pray that the zeal and fervor of the Salesians in their mission with the young may grow from strength to strength.
