'MUMBAI GREEN UP' LAUNCHED

MUMBAI, JUNE 05, 2012: Celebrating World Environment Day, 'Mumbai Green Up' was launched this morning by GreenLine, the Don Bosco Environmental Forum. The launching of this campaign was held at 8.00 a.m., at Vintage Football Club grounds, Borivali. Introducing the event, Mr. Wilfred Fernandes, founder member and trustee of the Club, said that the Vintage Football Club felt privileged to host the launching of the Mumbai Green Up campaign. He also pointed out that besides being sports lovers, the members of this club were environmental enthusiasts and were particularly keen on greening up their neighbourhood.

 

Elaborating on the campaign, Fr. Savio Silveira explained that Mumbai Green Up is an attempt to improve the city's deteriorating tree cover.  There are approximately two million trees in Mumbai, which has a population of close to fourteen million people.  Hence, there is just one tree breathing out oxygen for every seven persons. A city like New York, for example, has an average of five trees per person, and has managed to maintain its green cover, despite all development. Mumbai Green Up is a call to the citizens of this metropolis to plant trees wherever possible, during this monsoon. GreenLine is providing the saplings, free of cost, as part of this campaign.

 

Mr. H. N. Prabhu, President and Managing Trustee of Vintage Club, planted the first sapling, thereby setting the campaign in motion. Next, Fr. Elson Barretto planted a sapling, after which, other club members planted saplings around the ground. A total of fifty saplings were planted in the Vintage campus. The Mumbai Green Up campaign hopes to see five thousand tress planted across the city, during this monsoon season.
