PARISH ORGANIZES FOR ITS CHILDREN A DIWALI MELAVA CUM MISSION FETE

Bento D’Souza

ST. JOHN'S PARISH, BHINGAR - AHMEDNAGAR, November 12, 2012 :  “The laity in the church is a sleeping giant whose josh (enthusiasm), energy and vitality has never been tested.” This truth was amply proved today, when the newly elected parish councilors, inspired by the Parish Priest Fr. Nelson Falcao,  set about creating a special day called the Diwali Melawa for the children of the parish and various schools around. This was also an event organised to involve people in the Mission Sunday commemoration.

Fr. George D’Abreo blessed the stalls at the outset. The event was cash free, as all transactions took place with coupon credits of 5, 10, 20 or 50 point value. More than thirty interesting items - either of delicious food or games of skill,  were all run, managed and administered by the representatives of the twelve different zones, cramped into twenty stalls.

The usually empty football ground was bustling with children on the Jumping Jack, or honing their acuity skills, or patronising the food points, a daylight disco point and a good variety of fete games .  There was a Point Bank for coupons and Prize Point for purchasing gifts at the mela, where all worked hard the whole day to make Bhingar come alive.

Tombola and dance, skill and luck games, chicken biryani, chinese cuisine and ethnic junkha bhakar, not forgetting icecream of many types and sizes, kept the kids actively running from the coupons stall shoppe to the fete site, and then to the prize stall to pick up their gifts. Enthusiasm was not lacking anywhere.

To add to the gaiety of the event, 21 aspirants with Fr Cletus from DB Lonavla  joined us for lunch. All had an enjoyable and thrilling day to remember for a long time. What began at 9.00 in the morning ended with the evening Mass, after which all left for home, exhausted but happy. “We have done it all ourselves,” they proudly whispered.

With this scintillating mega-event, the Bhingar parish has set a benchmark in developing the energy and motivating the parishioners in executing strategic planning, power animation and cohesiveness. The field is now open to embark on more challenging events and projects. As Barack Obama declared in his speech on being reinstated as President, “The best is yet to come...” Bhingar, please take note!
