by Bibiana Estibeiro

MATUNGA-MUMBAI, NOVEMBER 6, 2013: 25th October saw 34 youth flocking from the Salesian parishes of Mumbai towards Don Bosco Yuva Sanstha, Karjat for a 3 day SYM Leaders' Formation which would enable them to function effectively as animators. Fr. Xavier Devdas, Br. Savio and Br. Mavron welcomed the group and showed them to their lodging which was quite simple yet adequate for the required stay.

The three days were filled with interactive cum informative events in the form of sessions, games, tasks, team–building exercises, Eucharist, nature meditation, Eco-spirituality and cooking.

The sessions were animated by the DBYS team and Frs. Isaac, Anton, Joe Braganza, Xavier, McEnroe, Allwyn and Br. Ramesh. They spoke about building communion in the community, focusing on processes more than on events, the 7 steps of Salesian Youth Spirituality and practical ways of living it, how to begin Salesian Youth Groups, Eco-spirituality and promoting SYM in parishes.

The games, daily chores and team–building exercises focused more on building each one's leadership qualities. The cooking for the group created a platform as well as an opportunity to work with different leaders under one umbrella. The animators enjoyed the meal and commented that it was the first time that the entire group shared their food and ate together.

The nature meditation and Eucharist each day set the tone for the day's events. During the campfire the participants presented the various issues that obstruct changes in the society. The trek was an occasion for the two young German volunteers to share their reason for volunteering and their experience working with the Don Bosco Shelter boys.

Each SYM leader took home rich experiences of working and living together the Salesian Way, so that they could replicate and share what they learnt in their own parishes.
