CHHOTA UDEPUR, JULY 13, 2008: ‘Skills Development’ is the new buzz word in present day India. With job opportunities growing, many companies are facing an acute shortage of skilled workers. Keeping this scenario in mind, at the recently held Rectors’ Meeting in was proposed to focus on skills development as a priority area, especially for poor and disadvantaged youth, so as to enhance their employability and thereby guarantee them a better future. We at Chhota Udepur decided to move into this important avenue immediately since there are literally thousands of unemployed youngsters in the villages here. Many of these young people are either school dropouts, or they have finished their schooling and are now unable to find any employment – we thought that helping them find suitable employment would be an excellent way of exercising our youth ministry. Hence, as a first step, we contacted Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T), which has a Training Centre at Ahmedabad, and is constantly recruiting youngsters who they train and place in their company. Yesterday, July 12, we had the first ‘recruitment drive’ for which 98 village youth were present. Mr. Parikh from L&T Ahmedabad spoke to the group and explained to them the induction process. Those who wish to join the company will have to undergo a 3 months training at Ahmedabad, after which they will be absorbed into the company. As can be well imagined, those present were eager to enrol for this training. It was decided that 30 will join the training on July 15, and the others will begin on August 1. Further, Mr. Parikh offered to induct 100 youth from Chhota every month into the L&T training and placement programme. This has generated much excitement here and we have decided to earnestly pursue this great opportunity!
