UNDERSTANDING THE MISUNDERSTOOD – SEMINAR ON DYSLEXIA

Carmen Panikker

NORTHERN ARABIAN VICARIATE, SEPTEMBER 15, 2012 :  The Indian English Academy School (IEAS) in Northern Arabian Vicariate is celebrating 10 years of its existence in the Gulf region. To celebrate this decennial and mark its presence here in Kuwait a variety of events are being organized. One such event was a workshop on ‘Understanding and Helping Children with Learning Difficulties’ by Fr. Ajoy Fernandes, sdb.

This workshop was held on Wednesday, 12 September from 8am to 1pm at the IEAS School Premises and was open to teachers and counsellors from the 16 Indian schools in Kuwait.

The workshop began with a brief introduction by Carmen Panikker, IEAS Counsellor who welcomed the 55 participants from 15 Indian schools in Kuwait. Fr. Francis Kharjia sdb, Director of IEAS introduced the speaker Fr. Ajoy Fernandes sdb, a Master in Philosophy and Theology and a Doctor in Clinical Psychology, hailing from Mumbai.

Fr. Ajoy Fernandes drew from his vast knowledge and experience in this field during his presentation. He eloquently shared insights and tips on identifying students with learning difficulties and enlightened the participants on how to deal effectively with students manifesting symptoms of dyslexia. He also facilitated a lively group discussion giving teachers and counsellors an opportunity to raise questions and clarify action steps. The interactive nature of the session coupled with the enthusiasm of Fr. Ajoy, kept all the participants engrossed and captivated throughout the workshop.

The workshop concluded with a brief thank you from Fr. Lionel Braganza the Principal of IEAS. Teachers and Counsellors expressed their great appreciation for this highly pertinent and interesting program. They felt enriched with the insights gleaned from this workshop and left feeling better equipped to handle the needs of the special children in their care.

The personal testimony shared by Fr. Ajoy Fernandes brought tears to the eyes of those present. We are grateful to Fr. Ajoy for equipping us with knowledge of how to deal with students suffering from dyslexia. We thank the IEAS management for organizing the seminar for us.

GOD BLESS FR. AJOY FERNANDES.
