MUMBAI, AUG 13, 2016: A phonic workshop was conducted on July 30 at Don Bosco High School and Junior College, Borivli for the parents of the students studying in Savio Kindergarten. The aim of the session was to acquaint parents with the Sound of Phonics, so they would be better equipped to assist their children at home, thus reinforcing what was being taught in school.
The workshop was conducted by Hazel Rebello - a certified Phonics Trainer - who has been teaching phonics using the Jolly Learning method for over nine years. She has conducted similar workshops for teachers in over 40 schools across Mumbai and Pune from the SSC, ICSE, CBSE and the IGCSE boards.
During the workshop, the parents of junior kindergarten were introduced to the Basic Phonic Sounds of all the letters, thereby establishing a foundation for correct reading and writing skills. The participants found the sessions enriching and were happy with the schools efforts to integrate them into the learning system.
Juanita Largo Afonso, a parent said, "The phonics workshop has been a great experience. It made things clear to us and I'm sure it will be very helpful and will enable us to help our kids to read and learn spellings. The decision to have this session for parents was also great because it will ensure that the parents and teachers are on the same page and that there's no confusion when teaching the kids."
Effective teacher-parent collaboration is definitely in the best interests of the little ones, as they have only just embarked on a fascinating journey of discovery of sounds, letters and words.
