BIS # 1152 NEW ACADEMIC YEAR BEGINS AT UPS

ANS News ROME, OCTOBER 17, 2008: On October 15, the solemn opening of the new Academic Year of the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome took place. The day began with Mass in the parish church of Our Lady of Hope adjacent to the University at which Fr Adriano Bregolin, Vicar of the Rector Major, presided. Fr Bregolin invited the staff and students at the beginning of the new academic year to renew “the depth of their commitment and their desire for the new.” After the Mass there was the Academic Function in the Paul VI Hall during which the Rector Magnificus of the UPS, Prof. Fr Mario Toso, and Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Secretary of State spoke. In his report Prof. Toso pointed out that the task of the Salesian University, like that of any other Pontifical University, was that of presenting “the human sciences according to the Christian inspiration”. “Education and the University Today” was the subject of the Academic Address given by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone. Among those present at the opening of the Academic Year of the UPS were Fr Francesco Cereda, Councillor for Formation, Br. Claudio Marangio, Economer General, the new Superior of the UPS Vice Province, Fr Joaquin D’Souza, some Ambassadors to the Holy See and the academic community represented by staff and students.
