BIS # 1294 - ORDINATIONS AT PUNE

Ashwin Macwan sdb PUNE FEBRUARY 23, 2009: On Friday, February 20, five Salesians, Briston Britto and Royal D’Abreo of the Mumbai Province, together with Julius Rasquinha, Santaremand Lopes and Constantine Fernandes of the Panjim Province, were ordained deacons by Bishop Valerian D'Souza, at Sacred Heart Parish, Yerwada. They chose the theme “Reach out in Love” for their diaconal ordination.
In his homily, Bishop Valerian spoke about the ministry of service in the Church. He pointed out that deacons are called in a special way to serve with love. After the Eucharist, Fr. Michael Fernandes, Provincial of the Mumbai Province, thanked the Bishop and the staff of DBYC, and congratulated the deacons for their courageous "yes" to the Lord. Deacon Santaremand proposed the vote of thanks on behalf of the five new deacons. A felicitation programme and dinner was organized for the deacons at Don Bosco Youth Centre. Their parents, relatives, friends of DBYC and many religious were present.
On Saturday, February 21, Fr. Michael Fernandes conferred the ministry of Lector on seven young Salesians and the ministry of Acolyte on one. These ministries are a step towards the priestly ordination.
