BIS #1913 SHARE THE LIGHT: COMMISSIONING CATECHISTS

Bro. Velasli and Smita Salve
NASHIK, JULY 7, 2010: On June 27 and July 4 the Catechism Teachers of Don Bosco Parish, Nashik and Dominic Savio Church, Satpur were commissioned and the Catechism classes began for the year 2010-11. The theme for the commissioning was “Share the Light of Christ”. In both the Churches the commissioning consisted of the Holy Eucharist during which at post-communion time the Parish Priest, Fr. Nelson Falcao asked a few questions to the Catechists asking about their availability, generosity, readiness and willingness to teach the Catechism of the Church and to share the Light of Christ. The Catechists responded in unison their readiness to serve the Lord through the work of Catechesis.

Earlier on June 20 all the Catechists about twenty-five of them (Brothers, Sisters and Lay People), attended a Catechetical Seminar conducted by the Pastoral Centre, Bandra, Mumbai, held at St. Anne’s Cathedral Church, Nashik. Fr. Terrence Murray, the Director of the Pastoral Centre, Bandra, and his team did a wonderful job in trying to convince the Catechists that it is not enough to teach prayers to the children but along with that to creatively present various Biblical, Sacramental, Liturgical, Christological, Ecclesial, Pneumatological and Marian themes also.

The Parish, this year has taken seriously the catechesis. The Parish Pastoral Councils on both sides of the Parish are serious about the Catechetical Mandate. The Parish Priest is trying to get involved as many lay people as possible in this ministry of Catechetical teaching. Fr. Nelson’s foresight is that in the context of religious vocational crisis of the present and the future, it is better to anticipate and get ready our lay teachers and lay leaders in the Church.
