PUNE, OCTOBER 21, 2010: The Sports Festival 2010 kicked off with a spectacular opening ceremony on October 18, 2010 before the exams could begin as part of a cordial welcome to an extraordinary visitation of Rev.Fr. Maria Arokiam Kanaka SDB, the Regional superior. He was welcomed along with Fr. Rector Francis Kharjia, Fr. Principal Donald Fernandez and Fr. Administrator George Miranda with the guard of honour.

The theme for the year “Peace and Harmony brings prosperity to the nation and the world for the year 2010-11 coincided with the Common Wealth Games message sent by her Majesty the Queen of England stating “It helps all nation to search together for peace throughout the world.”

The program began with a spectacular March Past by the school, Jr. College and DBA led by the School Captain Madhan Nair followed by the school Vice-Captain Janet Mani. The sports flag was brought in solemnly by the various head boys and head girls of the institution. The torch was enthusiastically carried by the winners of the last year’s individual championship of the various sections. Madhan Nair, the School Captain took the sports person’s oath and the sports person’s prayer was recited by the sports secretary, Steffi Manikam.

Fr. Maria Arokiam Kanaka declared the sports meet open and released the white and blue balloons, the symbol of Peace and Harmony. The students of STD V and VI presented an exquisite performance in Yoga, Aerobics and Mass drill, a sign of fitness, peace and tranquility. Std VII and VIII presented artful floats with apt messages.

Fr. Rector introduced Fr. Arokiam and said that he is not new to Pune or Yerwada but a part of the beginning of Don Bosco, Pune. The chief guest in his address said that he was highly impressed with the captivating performance. He applauded the Principal and the staff for their efficiency and the perfect organization. He asked the students to love God and one’s country. He said, “There is tremendous energy and talent, much more than one can think one has. Talents are hidden within and you should bring out your best”. Don Bosco always insisted on having a playground before building a school. Don Bosco won the hearts of the young through play. In fact when the world football games were to begin, there was a suggestion that Don Bosco should be made the brand ambassador for the games as it was he who brought the young together through football. The chief guest said, “Exams are like sports and success in the coming exams must be as successful as the sports day.”
The Principal wound up the ceremony thanking the children and said, “You were fantastic, God’s creation, well done!” He also thanked the staff for their efforts. Finally he thanked Fr. Arokiam for his presence and said he was very delighted to have him and for enlightening us with his words of wisdom. Fr. Donald Fernandez appreciated the staff, parents, the PTA and the class four workers who work behind the scenes. It was indeed a memorable event.

Later on in the afternoon Fr. Arokiam met the entire staff of Don Bosco Institution. He laid stress on the life of Don Bosco and the institution all over Asia and world. He said, “Hundred and sixty million youngsters are proud to belong to Don Bosco institution”. Don Bosco institutions are meant for the poor and the teachers should have unconditional love and a heart for the poor children. It is important that you love students but more important is to get the children to love you.

The supervisors of various sections gave a briefing about the working in their section.

Fr. Arokiam thanked the staff for their dedicated service.

The construction work of the Junior college has finally begun. The foundation stone blessed by Fr. Provincial on August 27, 2010 was finally laid by Fr. Arokiam for the work of the new building to be completed.
