SILVER JUBILEE CELEBRATION OF SHELTER DON BOSCO

WADALA, AUGUST 22, 2012 :  Shelter Don Bosco had an auspicious start of their Silver Jubilee celebrations on the birthday of Don Bosco, our Father and Founder. It was an event well organized and planned to rejuvenate the spirit of the Street work at Shelter. The Function was held in the premises of Shelter Don Bosco itself, where many dignitaries, friends, benefactors and well-wishers of the institute gathered to recount memories of Shelter and look forward to its growth and progress. The theme for the Jubilee Year is  “Care and Share.”

The Day was organized by Fr. Roger Jones, the Rector, Fr. Roy, Dn Jesu , Cl. Vishal and the Staff of Shelter Don Bosco. The Evening Celebration began at 6.30 pm sharp. The Chief Guest for the evening was Fr. Michael Fernandes, the Provincial of Mumbai Province and also present was Fr. Bosco Pereira, sdb, the founder-director of the institute. The event flagged off with a dance performance by the girls of Anmol, the FMA Street Venture. It was followed by a Welcome to the Dignitaries by Dn. Jesu. This was followed by a short Audio Visual presentation and a creative dance by the boys on the song ‘One Tribe’.

The main highlight of the evening was the launching of ‘Project 25 to Reach Out’. Cl. Vishal presented the project to the audience as the effort to revive the spirit of Shelter to get in touch with the street kids. The ideology of the project is made up of “three R-s: Rescue, Rehab, and Restore.” He spoke on the role of the volunteers in helping to identify the street kids and to help make an analysis of the situation today in the city. The volunteers are supposed to spend 2 hours a day and 5 days a month in this work. Fr. Michael Fernandes was requested to give the volunteers a kit bag of the project. With the permission of the railway authorities, the volunteers will be given an identity card stating that they are working in association with the railways. The volunteers then took a solemn promise to commit themselves to this task of reaching out.

Fr. Bosco Pereira then came forward and expressed his thoughts and experiences that he had been through during the founding years at shelter. This was followed by a dance on a bollywood number by the shelter boys. Fr. Michael Fernandes the chief guest shared his sentiments with the institution and challenged them to reflect and renew its approach to the situation of the present day.

Towards the end, all the shelter boys sang the Jubilee anthem with choreographed movements.  It was delightful to see the boys singing the song composed by Dn. Charles from Karjat.

After the song Fr. Roger Jones gave the vote of thanks enumerating all the people who have been behind the work for the jubilee. He also acknowledged the contribution of various significant people towards the growth and development of Shelter.

The final part of the celebration was the celebration of the birthday of the boys along with Fr. Xavier Devdas. The birthday song was played for them and they cut the birthday cake.  The event culminated with a fellowship meal for all the guests whom the boys took good care of.

The evening’s celebration left an indelible mark on the minds and hearts of all those who had come.  The boys had worked their magic.  “We share because we care”
