XAVIERITES BLOOM AT DBYS KARJAT
Cl. Renold Lemos
DBYS-KARJAT, SEPTEMBER 14, 2012: The Nature Club comprises of 85 students from St. Xavier’s Academy, Churchgate attended a training programme on ecology on September 11, 2012 at DBYS Karjat. Accompanied by their teachers, they were introduced and trained in the various environment friendly projects developed here.
The aim of this programme was to create an awareness of our common vocation as humans to protect and care for the nature, and more especially the children- who are the future of tomorrow. With this awareness, the programme also meant to train the students to make use of the environment in an eco-friendly way.
In the introductory talk, Fr. Xavier Devadas gave them the basic mantra to conserve nature-Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. The students were introduced to the various eco-friendly projects developed at the centre, the bio gas plant, bio compost, grey water recycling, kitchen waste recycling, paper making, charcoal making, manure making, tapping solar energy, use of innovative ‘chulas’ to reduce pollution and ;eliminate cutting of large trees. They were also introduced to innovative farming, like bottle garden, growing vegetables in sacks, garbage garden etc. The students performed the practicals along with the theory, which gave them firsthand experience to replicate it in their school, houses and neighbourhood.
The students were very interested and lively. After the day’s training they put up environment related skits and charts, which in return boosted them to take nature seriously. The students also showed remarkable responsibility and maturity in the group discussions and presentations. Before leaving, the students thanked the Salesian community for the wonderful hospitality and the eco-friendly projects they learned here at DBYS karjat.
