“PHYSICIAN HEAL THYSELF” – A FELLOWSHIP OF DOCTORS AND NURSES

John Joseph

NORTHERN ARABIAN VICARIATE, SEPTEMBER 24, 2012 :  The Parish of St Therese of the child Jesus, in the northern Arabian vicariate, organized a programme on Thursday, 20 September for those in Medical Profession. The programme began with a Holy Mass at 7.15 pm. Around one hundred and twenty five Nurses and a few doctors gathered in the Church.

Dr. Shubha Saldanha welcomed all the participants and explained the theme of the programme: ‘Physician heal yourself’. Fr. Joy, the main celebrant, welcomed the congregation and he presented Jesus as the ‘Healer Par excellence’. He added that the Church continues the Healing ministry of Christ for the people of today through its members. Since a priest was available in the confessional, he encouraged the people to go for the sacrament of confession during the mass. After all, even the healers need healing from Jesus the Healer.

In his homily, Fr. Joy explained that surgeries and medicine may fail, but the Faith filled Christians of today (nurses) with their continuous care and persevering prayer can bring about healing and life to people. The liturgy was animated by the Jesus youth while the children’s choir animated the liturgical singing.

What followed was a short presentation by Dr. Ajay D’souza on various aspects of ‘Work Life Balance’. Through the use of the power point presentation, he enlightened all on how one can blend Professional life with a Christian Response.  Later, Dr. Milania Jacob addressed the participants and provided useful tips on how to handle stress through her talk on ‘Stress Management’. The talk was tailored for the people in medical profession. Her work shop on Physical Exercise energized the audience with a lot of enthusiasm, participation and laughter. Fr. Francis Kharjia, who was the moderator for the evening introduced each speaker and regulated the flow of questions to the speakers.

This was the first time that the parish invited those involved in medical profession. It was an attempt to create a family of doctors and nurses. It was an occasion to make the people aware that they are called to be like Christ who himself was a healer.

As the doctors and the nurses left, they expressed their gratitude to Fr. Joy who had conceived the event. They requested the organizers to have more such programmes in the future.
