Provincial Chapter 2013 – Session I

MATUNGA-MUMBAI, DECEMBER 05, 2012 :  Becoming better “Mystics of the Spirit, Prophets of Fraternity and Servants of the Young” is the theme adopted by the Salesians of the Mumbai province for their Provincial Chapter 2013.

 

Sixty salesians came together at 9 am to begin the first session of the Chapter, moderated by Fr. Barnabe D'Souza and Fr. Valerian Pereira. Fr. Barnabe led the members in prayer. Fr. Michael Fernandes the provincial, situated the theme of the Chapter in his preliminary remarks. Fr. Barnabe then presented the schedule, the officials and the commissions, and declared the Chapter open. Fr. Valerian read the chapter regulations which were passed with a few modifications.

 

The rest of the morning session was dedicated to the presentation of the drafts on themes and policies: Mystics of the Spirit, Prophets of Community, Servants of the Young, Structures and Formation, Salesians and Lay Collaborators, Accountability and Responsibility, Continuity of Works and Transfers, and Evaluation of Priorities in the light of AGC 413. 

After lunch, the confreres met in their commissions where resource invitees addressed them on their particular themes. Fr. Francis D'Mello sj spoke about being Mystics of the Spirit; Fr U. Jose svd dealt with Prophets of Community; Mr Conrad Saldanha gave his insights on being Servants of the Young; and Fr. Tony D'Souza sdb touched on Congregation and Province matters.

 

At the start of the plenary session at 4:30 pm, the provincial released a few Salesian publications: a compilation of Fr. Peter Gonsalves' audio compositions, Fr. Nelson Falcao's English translation of Thomas Stephens’ Kristapurana and a resource booklet for the Year of Faith prepared by Fr. Vivian D'Souza. The provincial also launched the website of DBYS Mumbai.

 

Each of the four commissions presented their themes, discussions, findings and questions to be addressed. Fr Valerian then presented the schedule for the second session of the Provincial Chapter to be held from February 4 to 9, 2013 at Don Bosco Lonavla. Fr Barnabe closed the session after thanking those who had contributed and invited all the communities and confreres to participate in the preparation for the final session.
