TOGETHER IN COVENANT–A VALENTINE FELLOWSHIP OF COUPLES

Amira Peter

NORTH ARABIAN VICARIATE, February 18, 2013: On Thursday, February 14, 2013, the Cherubs Team of the Family Ministry of St Therese Parish in the North Arabian Vicariate organized its monthly program for couples married in 1996. It was attended by twenty two couples and about forty children.

The Program began with Mass at 6.30 pm celebrated by Fr. Francis Kharjia. The liturgy was well prepared keeping the marriage theme in mind. The liturgical singing was animated by the melodious voices of the school children, ably led by Faust and Reema Nash.

In his homily, Fr. Francis illustrated humorously that "fights" in a marriage are just another means of communication. Husband and wife are differently created, with different perspectives on the same situation. He went on to explain that God created woman from the rib of a man to indicate that she is an equal partner and together they should strive to be the "perfect team."

Mass was followed by a brief presentation by Leela Mathias on the various Parish activities to increase awareness and offer couples an opportunity to participate more actively in the parish community.

Next, over light snacks, an enrichment session was conducted by Sonu George on "The Power of Listening to the Word of God." Through his own life experiences and various testimonies he elucidated the numerous benefits of incorporating the Word of God in our daily routine. Each of us has been created by God with a very specific plan and purpose. Therefore, just as a daily vitamin can boost our physical health so also can scripture be our daily medicine for a happy and successful marriage and family life.

This enriching session was followed by a lively fellowship of games, spot prizes and dancing, all laced with a Valentine's theme.

Ice-breaker games gave the couples an opportunity to get to know others married in the same year. After the wives pinned hand-made roses on their spouses, an intimate newspaper dance set the mood for a romantic and enjoyable evening. The lively music provided by Shaun Rebello kept the couples on their feet while the MC Raymond did a stellar job of keeping them all engaged and excited.

All this while, in a separate area, a special program was underway for the children to enable the couples to spend undisturbed, quality time together. The children's program included a variety of activities ranging from an animated movie, action songs, art and craft to Bible Bingo for the older children and coloring for the younger ones.

Towards the end of the program the children joined the party. They brought the special Valentine cards they had made for their parents.

After a lively game of passing the parcel, they performed an action song along with their parents. Vote of Thanks delivered by two participants expressed strong appreciation for the Cherubs and the Parish for organizing such an enjoyable and memorable Valentine program.

Nourished and enriched, the happy families returned back to their homes. Several couples also volunteered to be active members in the parish by registering for the various parish activities.

Feedback forms completed by the couples will help the Cherubs continuously improve the program over time.

"For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29: 11
