WADALA-MUMBAI, FEBRUARY 20, 2013:  The Parish of Our Lady of Dolours came alive on the February 12, as the East Indian Community celebrated the Etros (pancake Tuesday) festival on our grounds.

The idea was mooted by the Parish Priest, Fr. Godfrey at the Parish Council meeting. Usually the Goan community celebrated the feast of St. Francis Xavier on the December 03, with a Konkani mass and a fiesta after that in the church square, replete with goan dishes available. Fr. Godfrey asked that there be a Marathi day on the February 06, the feast of St. Gonsalo Garcia. Since Fr. Godfrey and Fr. Vivian would be away from the parish to attend the Provincial Chapter, it was decided to have it on the February 12, 2013.

The East Indian community rose to the occasion with a well animated mass in Marathi followed by a procession to the grounds, complete with a live band and a single horse cart with the parish team seated therein. To receive the guests were twenty-five East Indian ladies with their traditional "lugdas" (saris) and the arti of the chief guest. The evening then unfolded with the lighting of the lamp and the welcome address.

The ladies and some youngsters in their traditional saris then came striding onto the stage in a delightful fashion parade. This was followed by the traditional dances by the youth and the adults. A skit in traditional East Indian dialect kept the sporting crowd glued to their chairs. The highlight of the evening was the honouring of twenty-five senior citizens of the community with a shawl and gifts. The compere for the evening, an invitee from Kurla, kept the crowd entertained with his wise cracks and succulent comments after each item.

Then the floor was left open for the young and old to indulge in their traditional dances, complete with outstretched hands and handkerchiefs fluttering in the wind.  Snacks and a sumptuous meal rounded up the evening. The parishioners from every part of the parish and from all communities had a delightful and entertaining evening.
