MATUNGA-MUMBAI, JANUARY 23, 2014: Don Bosco Matunga in collaboration with the Savio Club conducted the 9th All-India Savio Cup from the 11th to the 18th of January 2014 on the school basketball court. Seven teams participated in the men's category and four teams in the women's category. The sponsors for this event were United Phosphorus Limited, Tridaatu, Indian Oil and Elevate Sports.
The matches were held from 4.30 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. As days went by, the spectators grew in number. Many youngsters came to witness the matches. On Thursday, 16th January 2014, the players, officials and organizers were invited for an evening of relaxation and fun with music and performances. It ended with a grand dinner. Friday, 17th January was a day dedicated to the SLAM DUNK COMPETITION. Four players participated. This competition saw a grand turnaround on the stands.
The finals were held on Saturday, 18th January 2014. At 6.00 p.m. In the women's category Maharashtra played Southern Railways. It was a closely-fought match which went in the favour of Southern Railways. The men's final began at 8.00 p.m. between ONGC and IOB (Tamil Nadu). This game too was evenly balanced but ONGC went home winners. During the interval of the men's finals, the Principal, Fr. Bosco D'Mello, thanked the many people who helped in making the Savio Cup a success.
