BIS #4472 UNDERSTANDING THE PSALMS

BKaitan Lobo

PINGULI, JUNE 29, 2015: We have sung the Psalms and read them, but not many of us fully comprehend them. The pre-novices at Pinguli had all their questions about these songs of praise, answered in an intensive three-day long 'Course on Psalms' that began on April 25.

Father Steve Rodrigues SDB conducted the course and interspersed his teaching with quizzes to keep the pre-novices enthused through the sessions.

He spoke at large about the authors and history behind the Psalms, the various methods to study them, their classification and the different technical terms.

The Book of Psalms is the longest book in the holy Bible. It is made up of 150 chapters, 2461 verses and 43,743 words.

It provides a wealth of information for prayer and worship which includes commonly used verses like, 'The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want,' (Psalm 23) or 'How lovely is your dwelling place oh Lord,' (Psalm 84).

Father Steve also introduced the audience to the 'Prayer of the Church' also called the Breviary.

The Breviary is best described as the daily prayer of the Church, beginning with morning prayers, called Matins, and ending with night prayers, Compline.
